Shinjak’s Listening Lounge

Pedal Steel Guitar CAN Rock

December 12th, 2007

Around the great bygone year of 1996, I began to lose interest in commercial radio. Well I actually began losing interest in theactual commercials being played on commercial radio, so by default I drifted away from the medium. I did begin listening to the local eclectic public radio station which correctly introduced me to a little band known as the Grateful Dead. Little did I know that I would spend the next decade listening to the “jam band” genre ranging from the ABB to Widespread to my love/hate relationship with Phish and on into more modern bands such as Umphrey’s McGee and others. Needless to say, in that decade (1996-2006) a lot of great music was being made that I wasn’t aware of. Of course, there was a lot of mediocre music that I was aware of that consisted of mostly jock rock in the late ’90’s to the cock rock of the new millenium.

My eyes finally began to open up to what great music was being made “behind the scenes” when in 2005 I heard Robert Randolph And The Family Band for the first time. The pure energy and musicianship of Mr. Randolph’s performance captivated me and left me wanting more. So I began a quest began a search for simlar artists and found out the level of virtuosity of today’s independent music scene.

Because our goal here at the lounge is to please, we will provide some tidbits of today’s talented musicians for your listening pleasure.

First up: Mrs. Randolph’s bouncing baby boy’s band with his assorted family members backing him up. Enjoy!

It’s really been very quiet around the lounge for several weeks now. I have a couple of posts in the works for your listening pleasure, I promise! They just haven’t been fully fleshed out yet. Kind of like that skinny chick on Survivor:China. Attention Ronald, we have a Big Macmergency on our hands. Stay tuned for some great tunes I’ll be sending your way real soon!
