Shinjak’s Listening Lounge

Archive for the ‘news’ category

It’s finally time to shut the doors on the Listening Lounge.  It was fun while it lasted.  It started off as being lots of fun.  But there is one thing  that I had to find out the hard way:  There is a lot of music being made out there.  Some of it is genius and at the forefront of a true modern musical revolution.  However, some of it is pure crap.  I have reviewed both on this blog, but the guilty shall remain nameless.

And therein lies the problem.  I honestly don’t have time to separate the wheat from the chaff, the golden eggs from the rotten ones,  the sinkers from the floaters.  Therefore, Shinjak’s Listening Lounge will be closing indefinitely.  I will always treasure the artists who have made this blog possible and inspired me over the last two years (hint: see below).    Thanks for stopping by and make sure the music never stops.

Here is my original goodbye message started over a year ago:

Well kids, I have done it.  I have achieved what I set out to do 1.5 years ago when the doors to the lounge first opened.  I have found my new favorite music and I have shared it with the world.  My favorite new favorite bands haven’t changed a whole lot since I first discovered them.  The National still sees daily rotation in my playlists.  Since discovering them shortly before the relese of Alligator, this was the first band to change my opinion of indie rock.  This band’s pretentiousness stems from their raw talent, not leftover teenage angst.  The Everybodyfields changed my opinion of the alt-country / americana movement.  Seeing them live (a few weeks prior to their current hiatus) changed my opinion of what a live show could be.  Country music is dead.   The Everybodyfields are the new country music.  Death to country-pop radio.  Long live the new country!

I have also achieved some unexpected collateral benefits from starting this blog, and that is meeting and being befriended by the musicians themselves.  The guys from Bucktown Kickback have to be one of the kindest groups of individuals in music today.  They know that their fans are the life blood of the group.  Knowing your fans by first name probably means they will buy your next album (and maybe their friends who are impressed by this will too).  Many emails were also traded with Mr. K of Mr. K And The Famous.  I also got to chat with one of the top truly independent Irish bands, The Delorentos.  Good times all around.

I originally began writing this way back in March.  My intentions then were to announce the closing of the Listening Lounge.  I started looking at things again in May, and changed my mind to keep on kicking the old dead horse around here.

Back In Blue

May 12th, 2009

Well, the lounge is officially back online. I think I lost a few posts somewhere in the process, but I can’t remember what they were. So that tells me they weren’t really that important. Right? Anyway, we are biding our time on this free server. After rebuilding this site twice from scratch and twice from backups, I’m not really sure I have it in me to rebuild it again. So hopefully the free server holds out. Look for more soul searching posts on the Lounge real soon.

Looks like 2009 is shaping up to be another busy year for Ramseur Records.  Durham based band Bombadil is currently in the studio working on their second album.  The followup to A Buzz, A Buzz will be produced by  Scott Solter.  Their first show of the new year will be in Raleigh on April 10 at the Lincoln Theatre.  This will be their last show in NC for awhile, so see them close to home while you still can.  Here is a list of other upcoming shows:

4.10.09 – Lincoln Theatre – Raleigh, NC
with Lost in the Trees
4.11.09 – Plaza Bowl – Richmond, VA
4.13.09 – DC9 – Washington, DC

Stay tuned for more show dates!

Here is a video of the guys hard at work in the studio:

Sometimes it takes music awhile to sink in with me.  But after hearing it played on WNCW several times, I’ve officially decided that Julain of Norwich was one of my top 10 favorite songs of 2008.  I’ve offered the song here before.  But for the lazy among you (and the mp3 scrapers), here it is once again.

Another Month Passes…

October 22nd, 2008

Well, it really wasn’t supposed to happen quite like this.  I do have some music queued up that is ripe and ready for review.  It’s just (insert convenient excuse here).  So please stay tuned, and keep checking back for all of you favorite-songs-you-never-heard coming to a Lounge near you real soon.

Apparently I spoke too soon.  My permalinks and archives are broken.  It doesn’t really effect the front page, but it really screws with search page ranking and possibly the rss feed.  If anybody has any ideas about how to fix this, I’m open to suggestions.  It seems to happen when I switch the site over to a subdomain ( as opposed to which works fine).  Apply in the comments section.

EDIT:  Fixed it baby, yeah!  I love google.  Thanks for stopping by.

EDIT Part Dos: Apparently all of my pictures from before June of this year are gone.  But I think I can keep on living without those.  Can you?  Good.  Oh, and the songs from before June are gone too.  What’s that?  The sound of a thousand mp3 leechers screaming, that’s what it is. Fare the well, I say.

Very Few Casualties

September 4th, 2008

Well the giant hairy funky lovebeast that is Shinjak’s Listening Lounge made it from point A to point B with some minor scrapes, scratches, and amputations.  One negative: I have to rebuild my right hand menu w/widgets AGAIN!!! It’s ok, it was getting a wee bit cluttered anyway.  I also have to dig up all of the little bits of code that sitemeter and GAnalytics used so I can keep track of you leechers, um, devoted fans.  Keep coming back because the music will be playing loud again before you know it.

Or maybe that’s just the ringing in your ears?

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad

August 15th, 2008

The guys from Bucktown Kickback (who, btw, put on a hell of a three+ hour show at the Hickory Taproom last Saturday night) mentioned this band to me and I thought I would check them out.  They said Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad put on a great 1am set at FloydFest.  I see why now.  This is perfect Friday night at 1am music.  So either enjoy now, or wait until tonight when you’ve consumed too many latte’s and burritos. Isn’t music the greatest?

Vacationing In July

July 28th, 2008

Sorry for the lack of updates in the last couple of weeks.  I’ve been on vacation in the lovely mountains of Western NC/Eastern TN for the last week+.  But as always, my ears have not been on vacation.  So stay tuned for some exciting music coming to a listening lounge near you real soon.

Done And Crossed The Line

June 10th, 2008

by GoShiva

Well, I finally did it. I finally got so fed up with blogger’s clunky interface and lack of customization that I jumped ship. Shinjak’s Listening Lounge is now powered by WordPress! This has allowed me to customize the site to my slightly OCD satisfaction. Let me know what you think of the new layout and theme in the comments section conveniently found below this post. I have also added Yahoo Media Player which allows all the songs to be played individually or as a playlist. I think this is an improvement over the delicious player script which I was previously using. Do you like the Yahoo Media Player better?

Also notice that I have removed the Google Adsense ads (which earned me a grand total of 58 cents in the last eight months). In it’s place I now have a paypal donation link at the bottom of the sidebar. Feel free to buy me a cup of hot coffee ($1) or a cold beer ($3).

I have listed some band resources in the sidebar. These are to help out all of you budding musicians who are looking to make the leap into the digital realm.

At the bottom of each post are convenient links for you to share my posts on all of your favorite social networking sites (including, digg, myspace, facebook, reddit, technorati, google bookmarks, etc.). I hope to add some links to the sidebar that will make it easier to follow the Lounge with your favorite RSS reader in the near future.

That’s all of the changes for now, enjoy!

THE GOUGERS: A Long Day for the Weathervane

Texas based band The Gougers is making their latest album, A Long Day for the Weathervane, available as a free download for the entire summer! All you have to do is head over to , put in your info and the emails of three friends, and the download link will be sent to you.

The Gougers have been featured on the lounge before, but here are a couple of songs to whet your appetite:
